Introduction
Some trips don’t need much planning. This was one of those.
It started like a simple idea, “let’s go somewhere close.” Living in Kandy, we always have a few options, but this time we picked Bathalegala, also known as Bible Rock. I had been there once before, years ago, and I still remembered the view. That alone was enough to convince the others.
So it was me, my wife, and two friends. Nothing fancy. Just a small group, a few snacks, and the usual excitement that comes with a hike. If you remember we went kondagala with same group.
Where Is Bathalegala Located?
We took a bus from Kandy to Mawanella, and from there another bus to Hathgampala. The second bus ride was short, maybe about 20 minutes, but like always, we weren’t exactly sure where to get down. So we did what most Sri Lankans do — asked the conductor. He smiled, nodded, and told us exactly when to get off.
Hathgampala is the kind of place where time moves slowly. A quiet village, a few houses, and a small grocery shop sitting by the road. We stopped there, bought some biscuits and water, and had a quick chat with the shop owner. That’s something I always enjoy about these trips, those small, simple interactions.
From there, the hike began.
The Start of the Hike

The first stretch wasn’t really a “hike” yet. It was a long, steep concrete road that slowly climbs up toward the mountain. We could have taken a tuk-tuk, and honestly, many people do. But we decided to walk.
And yes… it was tiring
But it didn’t feel like a struggle. We took our time. Stopped here and there. Talked nonsense. Watched the village slowly disappear behind us. At some points, the road gets quite steep, and you can feel it in your legs. But then again, that’s part of the fun.
Entering the Forest Trail
Eventually, the concrete road came to an end. That’s when the real hike started.
The path narrowed into a dirt trail, winding its way through greenery. It wasn’t confusing at all — just one clear path leading upward. No guide needed, no second guessing.
At one moment, you’re walking through shaded forest, stepping over roots and damp ground. Then suddenly, you come across a small stream flowing between moss-covered rocks.
We even found a little natural water spot where my wife tried the water, laughing like a kid. Moments like that make the whole trip feel more real.
Nature & Unexpected Moments
And then there were the flowers.
Bright, almost unreal-looking red flowers — flame lilies — growing wild along the trail.
Somewhere along the way, like always, we picked up a random dog companion. It just joined us and walked with us all the way up like it had done this hike a hundred times before.
As we climbed higher, the forest slowly opened up into wide grasslands. The wind picked up, and suddenly the whole place felt bigger.
Reaching the Top

By the time we reached the top, the wind was strong enough to make you stop and just feel it.
And then… the view.
It’s one of those full 360° views where mountains stretch endlessly in every direction. Layers of green fading into blue. Clouds moving slowly across the valleys.
There’s a small temple at the top, along with a bell structure and a simple stupa. It still feels quiet, untouched, almost forgotten in a good way.
Experience at the Summit

There were also signs that people camp there — a small hut, a few leftover items.
We spent a good amount of time at the top. Took photos, enjoyed the wind, and just stayed in the moment.
But this place demands respect. Some sides are dangerously steep, so you have to be careful.
Safety Notes
There are spots that look safe for photos, but you should always be cautious.
Avoid risky behavior, especially near steep edges. It’s a beautiful place, but not one to take lightly.
Final Thoughts

Bathalegala is not the toughest hike. It’s not the highest mountain either.
But it’s one of those places that gives you more than what you expect.
Easy to reach, simple to climb, and yet when you’re at the top, it feels like you’ve gone somewhere far beyond just a small mountain near Kandy.
I’ve been there twice now… and I already know I’ll go again.
