Table of Contents

Kandy is known for rice and curry, kottu, and hoppers. Pizza is not the first thing that comes to mind when people think about eating here. But the city has a surprisingly good pizza scene, and once you start exploring it, you realise there are some genuinely solid options scattered around town.

I live in Kandy, so this list comes from years of eating at these places, sometimes for a quick weeknight dinner, sometimes after a long day out with the family. A few of them I go back to regularly. Some are proper sit-down restaurants with great views. Others are more casual spots that just happen to make really good pizza. Here is my honest list of the best pizza places in Kandy, and every single one of them actually serves pizza.

Vito Wood fried pizza - one of the best pizza places in kandy

1. Vito Wood Fired Pizza – The Best Pizza in Kandy

If you ask anyone in Kandy where to go for pizza, Vito comes up every single time, and it deserves the reputation. The restaurant sits above Kandy City View, which means you get a proper view of Kandy Lake from the top floor. The crust is thin, crispy, and has that slightly charred edge that only comes from a real wood-fired oven.

I have tried the chicken pesto and the spicy beef on different visits, and both were excellent. The portions are good, the cheese is generous, and they will customise your pizza if you have any dietary preferences. It does get busy, especially on evenings and weekends, and sometimes you will wait up to 30 minutes for a table. That said, the wait is worth it. The view alone makes it a memorable dinner spot.

They also do milkshakes and pasta, so it works well as a family outing. Parking is limited, so try to arrive a little early if you are planning a weekend dinner.

Location: 56 Saranankara Rd, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 12:00 PM – 9.30 PM
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Chicken Pesto Pizza or Spicy Beef Pizza

hideout lounge kandy

2. Hideout Lounge – Wood-Fired Pizza Near Kandy Lake

Hideout Lounge is one of those places that works for almost any occasion. It is close to Kandy Lake, lively without being too noisy, and the menu includes wood-fired pizzas alongside their broader selection of Sri Lankan and Western dishes. The pizzas here consistently get good reviews from both locals and tourists.

The atmosphere is the most polished of any place on this list. Bohemian interior, good lighting, and on Friday nights there is live music which makes for a genuinely fun evening out. The staff are attentive, and the plating is proper.

Reservations are a good idea on weekends, especially if you have a group. Portions can be on the smaller side for the price, so keep that in mind if you are very hungry.

Location: 52 Sangaraja Mawatha, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 7:30 AM – 11:00 PM daily
Price Range: Mid-range to upper mid-range
Favourite Dish: Wood-fired pizza (check their menu for current options)

sunset restaurant kandy

3. Sunset Kandy – Italian Pizza with a Rooftop Terrace

Sunset Kandy is one of the more underrated pizza spots in the city. It sits on Colombo Street and has a rooftop terrace where you can sit outside with a view of the street below. The menu is Italian-focused, which means pizza and pasta are the main things to order here, not an afterthought.

The Napolitana is excellent according to most reviews, and the BBQ Chicken Pizza is one of their more popular options. The interior is well designed with a clean, modern feel. Service is generally fast and friendly. Walk-ins are welcome, but they recommend a reservation to avoid waiting, especially in the evenings.

One thing worth noting: this place was previously known as La Mulberry and then rebranded to Sunset Kandy, so you might find it listed under either name online depending on when the listing was last updated.

Location: 63 Colombo St, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Price Range: Budget to mid-range
Favourite Dish: Napolitana Pizza or BBQ Chicken Pizza

Pizza hut

4. Pizza Hut Kandy – The Go-To for Familiar Flavours

Pizza Hut is not a hidden gem or a local discovery, but it earns its place on this list because it is reliable, central, and often exactly what you need after a day of sightseeing. The Kandy branch is on D.S. Senanayake Veediya, which puts it right in the middle of the city. Easy to find, easy to get to.

The stuffed crust is the thing to order here, specifically the Sri Lankan spicy chicken version. It is not something you will find at every Pizza Hut globally, and it works really well. The service is generally friendly and the restaurant is clean and comfortable.

Prices are mid-range by Sri Lankan standards. Not the cheapest meal in Kandy, but not unreasonable either. A good option if you are eating with a group that wants something everyone will enjoy without any debate.

Location: 06 A9, Kandy
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Sri Lanka Spicy Chicken Stuffed Crust

slightly chilled

5. Slightly Chilled Lounge – Wood-Fired Pizza with the Best Sunset in Kandy

Slightly Chilled is primarily known as a rooftop bar with one of the best sunset views in the city, but the food here is genuinely good and the pizza is one of the highlights. They have a short list of wood-fired pizzas on the menu alongside Chinese and other Western dishes. The pizzas are made with fresh ingredients and come out well.

The setting is what makes this place special. You sit on an open-air rooftop, the city spreads out below you, and if you time it right the temple lights come on just as you are finishing your first drink. Happy hour runs from 5pm to 6pm, which is a good reason to arrive a little early.

The menu leans more Chinese than Italian overall, but the wood-fired pizza section is worth ordering from. Closed on poya days, so check before you go.

Location: No. 29a Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM (closed on Poya days)
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Wood-fired pizza + a cold drink at sunset

Domino's Pizza Kandy

6. Domino’s Pizza Kandy – When You Want Something Fast and Familiar

Domino’s has a branch right in the city on Kottugodella Veediya, and it covers a specific need very well: when you want pizza that is fast, consistent, and exactly what you expect it to be. The menu is the same classic Domino’s range you would find anywhere, with their usual loaded options and combo deals.

It is also one of the most delivery-friendly options in Kandy, available on Uber Eats, which makes it useful if you are staying somewhere nearby and do not feel like going out. The dine-in space is compact but clean, and the staff are friendly.

If you are a first-time visitor to Kandy and want to spend your dinner budget on something more local, there are better options on this list. But if you know what you want and you want it quickly, Domino’s delivers on that every time.

Location: No.34, Kottugodella Veediya, 20000
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM daily
Price Range: Budget to mid-range
Favourite Dish: Whatever your usual Domino’s order is – it holds up here

Hangout Late night Kandy

7. Hangout Late Night – Great Views, BYOB, and Solid Pizza

Hangout Late Night is one of those places that surprises you. It is a BYOB concept restaurant with a western menu, which already puts it in a different category from most spots in Kandy. The pizza is listed alongside pasta, burgers, and grilled options, and it is consistently well reviewed.

What makes it worth a visit is the setting. You get a proper view of Kandy from the balcony, and on Saturday nights there is live music. The kitchen is open and you can watch your food being prepared. Service is attentive and the atmosphere is relaxed without being too quiet.

The BYOB concept means you bring your own drinks, which works really well if you want to keep the evening affordable. It is a good pick for a longer dinner where you plan to stay a while.

Location: 32D George E De Silva Mawatha, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Pizza + whatever you bring to drink

soul food kandy 1

8. Soul Food – Small, Clean, and Genuinely One of The Best Pizza Places in Kandy

Soul Food is a smaller restaurant that has built a loyal following in Kandy, mostly among people who appreciate clean, well-made food without a lot of fuss. The pizza here gets consistently good reviews, described as one of the better pizzas in the city by people who have eaten their way through most of the options.

The place is clean, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious. It is a good option if you want a solid meal without the noise or crowd of a bigger restaurant. Worth checking out if you are in the area and want something a bit different from the usual Kandy pizza spots.

Location: 48 Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe Mawatha, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 07:30 AM – 10:30 PM
Price Range: Budget
Favourite Dish: Pizza

Yaka Lounge

9. Yaka Lounge – Hidden Gem with the Best View in Kandy

Yaka Lounge is one of the most interesting pizza spots in Kandy, and also one of the least talked about. It sits on the 5th floor of the Sandriana Lake View Hotel on Sri Rajasinghe Mawatha, which means the view over Kandy Lake and the city is genuinely stunning, especially once the city lights come on in the evening. You take the elevator to the fourth floor and then go up a short flight of stairs to reach it, which sounds like a lot but is not.

The menu is focused on thin crust wood-fired pizza, pasta, and specialty dishes. Pizza is clearly the main event here. The pepperoni gets mentioned consistently in reviews, and several people describe it as one of the better pizzas they had in Sri Lanka. The place is British-owned, which explains the Voyager Coffee from Devon that they are also known for.

It is a smaller spot and the menu is more limited than the bigger restaurants on this list, but what they do, they do well. If you want good pizza with an incredible view and a relaxed atmosphere, Yaka Lounge is the place. Worth going in the evening.

Location: 9 Sri Rajasinghe Mawatha, Sandriana Lake View Hotel, 5th Floor, Kandy
Opening Hours: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Pepperoni Pizza or their wood-fired thin crust specials.

Pizza Nook

10. Pizza Nook – Wood Fired Pizza Hidden Gem in Kandy

Pizza Nook does not have the name recognition of Vito or the social media presence of Hideout, but it sits at 4.9 stars on TripAdvisor in the Kandy pizza category, and every review that mentions it calls it a hidden gem. That is usually a reliable signal that a place is doing something right.

It is a wood-fired pizza spot, budget-friendly, with quick service. The kind of place that locals know about and tourists stumble onto by accident. There is not a lot of information online about it, which is part of what makes it interesting. If you like discovering places that have not been over-written about yet, this is worth tracking down.

Location: 87 Colombo St, Kandy 20000
Opening Hours: 11:30 AM – 10:30 PM
Price Range: Budget
Favourite Dish: Wood-fired pizza

Kandy is not Colombo when it comes to pizza variety, but the city has more than enough options to keep you happy whether you are a visitor or a local looking for a change from rice and curry. Every restaurant on this list has been verified to actually serve pizza, which sounds obvious but apparently needed checking.

My personal top pick remains Vito Wood Fired Pizza. The combination of proper wood-fired crust and the view of Kandy Lake in the evening is genuinely hard to beat. But if you want something in the city centre, Sunset Kandy and Hideout Lounge are both worth your time. And if you just want something fast and reliable without thinking too much, Domino’s and Pizza Hut are both right there in town.

If you have been to any of these spots or have a recommendation I have missed, drop it in the comments. I am always looking for the next good meal.

If you are exploring the food scene in Kandy beyond pizza, the city has some excellent Indian restaurants worth knowing about, too.
