Introduction
I still remember the first time I walked toward Ehelepola Walawwa. The busy streets of Kandy slowly faded as I got closer to the Temple of the Tooth. Just a few steps away from the crowds, this quiet old mansion stood with a strong presence.
At first glance, it looks like just another old building. But once you stand in front of it, you feel its weight. This is not just architecture. This is a place shaped by one of the darkest and most important moments in Kandy history.
This 400-year-old Walawwa was restored and handed over to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic around 2022. Today, it has a new life. It now hosts the Wax Museum Kandy, where history is brought back through lifelike figures.
But before stepping inside, it is important to understand the story behind it. Because once you know the history, your visit feels very different.
The History

Standing inside the Walawwa, I could not help but think about the past. Every wall here feels like it has seen something. The story of Ehelepola Walawwa is closely linked to the final years of the Kandyan Kingdom. It is a story of power, loyalty, and tragedy.
Who Was Ehelepola?

Ehelepola Nilame was a powerful official in the Kandyan Kingdom. He served under King Sri Vikrama Rajasinha. He was respected and feared at the same time. His position gave him control over large areas. But his growing influence also created tension with the king.
The Conflict

At one point, Ehelepola was sent to collect taxes from a distant region. He did not return on time. The king saw this as a sign of rebellion. What followed became one of the most tragic events in Sri Lankan history. The king ordered the execution of Ehelepola’s family. This act shocked the kingdom. Even today, many people remember this story with sadness.
A Turning Point
After this, Ehelepola had no reason to stay loyal. He turned against the king and supported the British. This decision changed everything. In 1815, the Kandyan Kingdom fell to the British. Sri Lanka then came under full colonial rule. This moment marked the end of an era.
The Walawwa’s Role
As I walked through the building, I imagined how it must have been used in those days. The Walawwa served as a residence for high officials. Later, during British rule, it was used for administration. Over time, it changed hands and purposes. But its connection to Ehelepola and that turning point in history remains strong.
The Wax Museum

The Wax Museum Kandy at Ehelepola Walawwa transforms this historic mansion into a living story. It does not feel like a typical museum. It feels more like walking through time. The museum was officially opened on 17 July 2025. It was designed by Mr. Athula Herath from Gampola, and the Sri Lankan government invested around 300 million rupees into the project.
What You Will See
There are around 35 lifelike wax figures. Each one represents an important person from the Kandyan Kingdom.

One of the most interesting sections for me was the royal dining display. It shows how meals were prepared and served during the Kandyan Kingdom. It adds a different layer to the experience. You are not just learning about kings and battles. You are seeing daily life.

The museum is simple to walk through. It does not take too long, but it leaves a strong impression. For students and tourists, it is a great way to understand Sri Lankan history in a short time.
