Where to Eat in Jaffna – 8 Restaurants I Keep Going Back To

Share :

Table of Contents

Jaffna is one of my favourite places in Sri Lanka, and honestly, it’s mostly because of the food. I live in Kandy, and within just 4 to 5 hours of driving I can get to Jaffna and experience a food culture that you simply cannot find anywhere else on the island. The flavours, the style, the atmosphere, it’s completely different.

For the past few years, I have been visiting Jaffna at least once a year, mostly just to eat.

Getting There from Kandy

Even though it’s only a 5-hour drive, I’m not a fan of long hours behind the wheel. So what I usually do is leave Kandy around 7 pm, stop in Anuradhapura for the night, and then head to Jaffna the next morning around 9 am. It breaks the journey nicely, and you arrive fresh.

On the way into Jaffna, I stopped at a very small shop on the main road near Reecho Park. I don’t have the name or photos; I completely lost track of it, but I have to mention it because the food was next level. I had paratha with a mixed vegetable curry, and it was one of the most amazing parathas I have ever had. The shop owner didn’t speak Sinhala, so one of his customers kindly helped us order. I won’t add it to the main list since I can’t find the exact place, but if you happen to spot a small roadside shop near Reecho Park, don’t hesitate to stop. Ok lets get in the list, here are the best restaurants in Jaffna that I keep coming back to.

The Best Restaurants in Jaffna

Here’s a quick summary before I go into detail:

# Restaurant Must Try Vibe
1 Mangos Indian Jaffna Veg Biriyani Popular, near the city
2 Hotel New Selva Crab curry, Kottu Local crowd, outside the city
3 Jaffna Authentic Cuisine (JAC) Crab curry with pittu Famous, worth the wait
4 Hotel Vanni Inn Biriyani Busy on weekends
5 Lavin’s String hoppers, Ulundu wade Veg, city centre
6 Salem RR Biriyani Biriyani, Crab soup Modern, near the city
7 Malayan Cafe String hoppers, Dosa Old school, breakfast
8 Rio Ice Cream Ice cream Jaffna landmark

1. Mangos Indian Jaffna – One of the Best Restaurants in Jaffna for Veg Biriyani

What I like most about Mangos is that it’s one of those places that gets the balance right between quality food and a comfortable dining experience. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and easy to access, making it a great option for both families and travellers. During my visits, I’ve noticed it’s usually quite busy, which is always a good sign when looking for a good place to eat.

The veg biriyani is still my favourite item on the menu, but the rice and curry are also worth trying if you want a more traditional Jaffna-style meal. The portions are generous, the food is consistently good, and the location makes it a convenient stop when exploring the city. If it’s your first trip to Jaffna and you’re not sure where to eat, Mangos is a very safe choice that rarely disappoints.

Location: No 129, Main Street, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 11.00 A.M – 11.00 P.M
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Veg Biriyani (also rice & curry, dosas)

2. Hotel New Selva – Best place to try local flavors of Jaffna

This is a must-try. It’s not a big or fancy restaurant, but it’s always full of locals, and that tells you everything. They have a huge spread of curries to choose from. I tried crab, prawns, paratha, and kottu. I ordered the kottu because almost half the locals around me were eating it, and I just wanted to see how good it was. It didn’t disappoint.

Last year I tried cuttlefish curry with dosa, and that was next level. My wife really loved the food here, and we ended up taking some as takeaway as well. The staff and cashier were very friendly. It looked like the cashier might be the owner, but I’m not sure.

The restaurant is a bit far from Jaffna city, but the distance is worth it. Parking is limited, so you’ll need to park on the side of the road, but don’t let that put you off.

No reservation needed.

Location: No 1048m, Jaffna-Kankesanturai Rd, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 08.00 A.M – 12.00 A.M
Price Range: Budget
Favourite Dish: Cuttlefish Curry, Kottu

3. Jaffna Authentic Cuisine (JAC) – Authentic Jaffna Cuisine at Its Best

I found JAC through Google and was drawn in by the reviews. Most people suggested trying the crab curry with pittu for dinner, so that’s exactly what I ordered. That was the best dinner I had on the entire trip. Authentic from top to toe and easily one of the best crab curries I have ever eaten. If you are at Jaffna and not sure what to eat in Jaffna?, Start with this crab curry and Pittu.

JAC is very popular, and it does get busy, so sometimes you may need to wait a little for your food. Be patient, it is absolutely worth the wait.

The restaurant is nice and clean. There’s a lovely pond in the middle of the dining area, and the building feels like it was built on an old house, which gives it a lot of character. Staff are friendly and welcoming. They have a car park, but it can fill up, so you can park carefully outside on the street if needed.

You can visit without a reservation, but keep in mind it can sometimes be fully packed, especially in the evenings. If you’re visiting during a busy period, it’s worth calling ahead just to check availability.

The next day was supposed to be my day to drive back home, but I postponed it just to come back here for one more meal. That should tell you everything.

Location: No 812, Hospital St, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 11.00 A.M – 10.00 P.M
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Crab curry with Pittu

4. Hotel Vanni Inn (Jaffna Branch)

I didn’t know about this place until my friend Dill recommended it, and I’m really glad he did. The place is nice and has some good spots around it where you can take photos. Dill told me the biriyani was the best thing there, so that’s what I ordered. The portions are big, more than enough for one person. It was quite busy during my visit, probably because I went on a weekend.

No reservation needed.

5. Lavin’s – Simple Vegetarian Food in Jaffna City Centre

Lavin’s is a vegetarian restaurant right in the middle of the city. The place is nice and clean, and I used it for breakfast. I had string hoppers with ulundu wade if I remember correctly, my memory here is a little hazy, but the food was hot, fresh, and really good. Parking is a bit limited, but the staff helped me park in front of the restaurant.

No reservation needed.

Location: No 43, Adiyapatham Rd, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 07.00 A.M – 10.30 P.M
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: String hoppers + Ulundu wade

6. Salem RR Biriyani – Modern Jaffna Biriyani Spot Near the City

I found this place on my last visit. It looked fairly new but already had a huge number of reviews, which caught my attention. The name makes it obvious what to order, so I went straight for the biriyani without a second thought. The food was decent, and the restaurant itself is really nice and modern. They have parking, but it gets busy.

I also tried the crab soup, and it was really good. In a chat with a local, I heard it might be a chain originally from India, though I’m not completely sure about that. It’s very close to the city, so it works well for lunch or dinner.

No reservation needed.

Location: No 603 Hospital Rd, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 11.30 A.M – 10.30 P.M
Price Range: Mid-range
Favourite Dish: Biriyani + Crab soup

7. Malayan Cafe – One of the Oldest Authentic Jaffna Breakfast Spots

Malayan Cafe is one of those rare old-school Jaffna eateries that still feels completely untouched by time. There’s nothing flashy about it, but that’s exactly the charm. The space is simple and functional, with a steady flow of locals coming in for breakfast, quick chats, and their usual orders. You get the feeling this place has been part of the community for decades, serving the same comforting food to generations. Even the atmosphere feels familiar and unhurried, like it has its own rhythm that hasn’t changed in years. What makes it even more meaningful is its history. It is widely known as one of the older restaurants in Jaffna that remained open through the difficult civil war years, quietly continuing to serve food when so much around it was uncertain. That sense of endurance gives the place a deeper emotional weight that you can almost feel when you sit down to eat.

Breakfast here is where it truly shines. The string hoppers are soft, freshly steamed, and light, pairing perfectly with ulundu wade that’s crisp on the outside and soft inside. Add a ladle of kiri hodi, and everything comes together in a way that feels deeply satisfying without being heavy. The dosa is another solid option if you want something a bit more filling. What makes it stand out most is the consistency; nothing feels overdone, just simple, honest food served hot and fast. It’s also incredibly affordable, making it one of those places you can comfortably return to every morning while in Jaffna without thinking twice.

Location: C Ponnampalam Rd, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 07.30 A.M – 09.00 P.M
Price Range: Budget
Favourite Dish: String hoppers + Kiri hodi + Ulundu wade

8. Rio Ice Cream – A Landmark Stop in Any Jaffna Food Guide

I don’t think I really need to sell this one. Anyone who visits Jaffna ends up here at least once; it’s basically a landmark now. They have a huge variety of ice cream flavours plus some fast food options like rolls. It’s right next to Nallur Kovil, so it’s very easy to find. Loved the place, loved the ice cream.

No reservation needed.

Location: 448A, AB20, Jaffna
Opening Hours: 09.00 A.M – 10.00 P.M
Price Range: Budget
Favourite Dish: Ice cream (mixed scoops / faluda-style options also popular)

Final Thoughts

Jaffna has a food culture unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. Whether you’re driving up from Kandy as I do or coming from Colombo, it’s worth every kilometre. Every place on this list I have personally visited and eaten at, some of them multiple times over several years. I’ll keep updating this as I discover more on future visits.

If you’ve tried any of these places or have your own recommendations, drop them in the comments below. I’m always looking for the next great meal in Jaffna.
